Patriarchy is a social system in which men hold primary power and predominates the role of leaderships( political), financial authority, control of property and social privilege. The property and family title are inherited by the male lineage. Among Tamils male dominating tradition is seen from Historical to Modern era. Even the Paradigms in myths, rituals, symbols and doctrines are masculine.
Strong patriarchal traditions persist in our society, where sons are idolized and celebrated. The reason to celebrate men is that they are capable of earning, able to provide and safe guard their family, take care and provide for their age old parents, bring a wife to work for their family and many more duties. Even our traditional rituals and culture gives importance to men to perform it,like the death rituals.
Men are generally expected to be strong, aggressive and bold. Our culture, society and groups has gender role expectations. This may differ from group to group and also able to change over time.In our society men are assumed to be tall, muscular and strong enough to do hard works. Our men are mostly hyper masculine, that is physically and emotionally abusive to their partners. They believe that they are supposed to compete with other men and dominate feminine folks by being aggressive, ambitious, sexually experienced, insensitive and other qualities.
Men are not allowed to express their emotions which is harmful to masculine folks that they can't cry and express sensitive emotions. By breaking this gender stereotypes one can be themselves.
In Tamil Nadu there is a saying like "Unga veetil Chidambara aatchiya, Madurai aatchiya"( Chidambaram rule or Meenakshi regime in your home).At Chidambaram Temple Lord Nataraj is the main deity over there and the region surrounding it assumed to be a male dominating society. Meenakshi Temple in Madurai portrays the women domination in that region. Like wise many fun puns regarding the male domination.
In our society men dominate in taking decisions in any of the family issues, education of children, marriage decisions, property divisions, career opportunities,etc. Giving birth( number of children they want) is also decided by them. Women are meant to be loving, caring, hard working( all house hold works) and to look after the family. No importance was given to women in olden days.The percentage of female and their education was very low till the end of 20th century.Marriages are mostly arranged ones and the selection of groom is decided finally by the elder man in the family. After marriage the girl should reside with her husband and accept his family tradition and culture as her's and should nurture it without any harm to their family respect. Women are not allowed to help their parents in their old age, since it is the duty of the men. This is the main reason for the longing of male child.
Today's political system gives rights to women and women hold some position politically. But these positions are enjoyed and headed by the men folks of those respected families by making those women an idol in their positions.Though women are struggling in all the jobs to prove themselves, they have been exposed to misogyny, sexism, bullying at work places, harassment by male superiors,etc.
A few decades ago men were considered as the provider and protector of a family.Today's world faces a lot of discussion over gender equality. Women started fighting for their rights. Women are given equal career opportunities which makes them to provide for their family. So the traditional notion of male domination is dying nowadays.
