Although we entered the Millennium, from the dawn of the civilization till this millennium, the Indian women continues to be oppressed and ill treated. The gender based violence continues till date in every nook and corner of Indian society.
Violence against women occurs through out the life cycle from pre-birth, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood to senescence. According to the National Crime Record Bureau, in India there is, one dowry death in every 78 hrs, one sexual harassment every 59 min, one rape every 34 min, one act of torture every 12 minutes.
Since caste system is prevailing in India, mostly lower caste women are tortured by the other caste people. Average of 75% to 76% of lower caste women are tortured. In Tamil Nadu the percentage is about 36% to 38%. In this statistics Tamil Nadu stands second to Uttar Pradesh, which is a compunction to a district like Tamil Nadu which has a long history to portray the pride of their tradition and culture.
In no way women are treated equal to men. In olden days Tamilians used to have many children. They don't even care about the woman who gives birth to their children. In those days death rate of women were high due to death during deliveries. If a man loses his wife, he will remarry. So they were least bothered about women health.
Mostly babies were delivered at home and not in hospitals. This is because till 1990's there were no proper transport facilities in many villages of Tamil Nadu. So they were not able to go to hospital in time. This was prevailing in most of the villages in Tamil Nadu till two decades ago. Past 20 years many villages were provided with transport facilities and also hospital facilities. In every village there is a Government Health Center and the village ladies were given awareness about safe deliveries and also to take proper care of their health. All the medicines are being given free for these women by these Health Centers.
In many villages of Tamil Nadu they used to name the girl as 'Podhum Ponnu'(meaning no more girls), 'Vendaam'( don't want) or 'Vendaam Mani', if they think that they need no more girls. In one of the villages near Chennai, a girl named Vendaam achieved great success in her life, after a long struggle. For several years, Vendaam would pause for a moment before introducing herself to anyone. This was because in her name, she carried the shame and neglect associated with “Vendaam” in Tamil means 'don't want' – one of the several names typically given to a girl child by parents overcome by their desire for a boy.Today,Vendaam has done her parents and her village proud. The 19-year-old, in her final year of engineering at the Chennai Institute of Technology, was recruited by a top Japanese firm after a campus interview. She will be paid an annual salary of Rs 22 lakhs. Though girls are ill treated in many ways, they fight for their equality and started achieving it.As such difference was shown even in naming a girl.
In Tamil families boys are given preference rather than girls. So boys don't treat girls equal to them. They are grown up by seeing how their fathers treat their mothers and also other males in their family. They always have a thought that girls are inferior to them. Even parents don't teach moral to boys. They are very keen in guiding their girls. There are lot of books in Tamil to teach different morals for the girls. Here starts the gender violence at each home.
Some decades ago women were dependent on their fathers, brothers or their husband for all their needs. So, many women wanted their girls to be educated and employed, because they don't want their girls to be financially dependent on others even for their basic and personal needs.
Nowadays mostly all are having either single child or two children, and they want their children to be educated well and get settled. So according to their financial status they are having 1 or 2 children. Even though parents are changing a lot in their views and educating their girls, they can't treat the girls equal to boys. However they educate and breed their girls with courage and independent nature, in the aspect of marriage, the dowry system hammers them that girls are not equal to boys.Today's world started to visualize the change even in this system.
Whatever may be the struggles, girls are being educated and employed in almost all the fields in our country and abroad. But the sexual harassment on girls is increasing in nature rather than decreasing. Nowadays there is no age related sexual assault. Even a month old girl baby is sexually assaulted.Where do we lag in teaching the boys in our society? We teach girls about good touch and bad touch and also many safety measures to safeguard themselves but what about the teachings to the boys.
According to the psychologists , the men those who are indulging in sexual harassment of girl children( girls below the age of 14) are cowards. If a girl stands against them , they can't even proceed in their actions. That is why they choose small babies for their sexual quest. Even some of the school and college teachers are misbehaving with girls which is a great shame of this society. In work places women are being sexually harassed and bullied by some of their colleagues. Our Law and punishment is not so severe, so these human animals are least bothered about the Law.Even if girls complain about their problems or about some men who gives sexual torture to them, the parents get feared to face it keeping their girls future in mind, which paves way for these sexual thirst animals.
Doctors, Psychologists and Public say that if these men want only sexual satisfaction, they can approach commercial sexual workers rather than spoiling the girls, which seems to be right at one sense.Even here to protect a man, a woman is being spoiled. Without proper sexual education our boys and girls are like CAT ON THE WALL position in their sexual needs.
Women those who achieved and succeeded in their life could also have come across many issues related to the sexual harassment which they were not able to share. The "ME TOO" campaign which trends now has brought out many secrets of women related to this after so many years from their soul.
So, as a mother all women can take an oath to teach their boys and girls to develop an EQUAL and FEAR FREE society.
